Steven Dyer, 'America's Most Wanted' Pedophile, Handed Over To U.S. Police After Being On The Run For A Decade
VANCOUVER - A convicted child molester who was living undetected for years in Vancouver has been handed over to American authorities.
Steven Dyer was convicted a decade ago on 13 counts and faces 169 years behind bars in the U.S.
He was captured Tuesday night in Montreal and taken into custody in New York the next day.
"It's been a long time and (there was) good effort with authorities up there," said Deputy U.S. Marshall Frank Newsom.
"He's no longer hurting kids now. He'll spend the rest of his life in prison."
The 44-year-old went before a federal magistrate on Thursday and is expected to be returned soon to Arizona, Newsom said. He's wanted there for failing to show up for a court appearance in 2002, after which he was convicted in absentia.
There is an ongoing investigation into whether Dyer may have reoffended while living at two different residences in Vancouver.
"Often times with this kind of crime, we see that typically there's not just one victim but two victims — multiple victims," Newsom said. "He's been gone for a long time, so a person like this probably hasn't rehabilitated himself."
Vancouver police said on Wednesday, the morning after his arrest, the department only became aware Dyer was living in the city and that he has a criminal history.
Analysts from the Vancouver police sex crimes unit were working with the Canadian Border Services Agency to review unsolved files to determine if Dyer fit any suspect profiles.
"Steven Dyer is not currently suspected of committing any criminal offences in Vancouver," a statement said.
Newsom said there is also a probe into whether anyone helped him hide from police.
"With this kind of case, there's a possibility for other people to be arrested that may have aided and abetted him," Newsom said, noting the man must have had help because he wouldn't have held a high-profile job on the West Coast.
"The money had to come from somewhere."
Newsom said there's still the potential for additional charges.
Dyer was featured on episodes of the TV show "America's Most Wanted" over the past two years. He was nabbed while passing through Montreal's Trudeau airport upon returning from Venezuela.
The show described him as a pharmaceutical sales rep in Scottsdale, Ariz., who had a clean criminal history and volunteered with Big Brothers and Big Sisters of America.
It said he abused for more than 18 months a young boy he befriended, and later committed similar acts on another boy.
